Wildlife on the smallholding was not planned but has just happened. We have a large pond that is visited by many waterfowl, full of frogs, toads, newts and attractive dragon and damsel flies. Stocked with native fish, it is often visited by a kingfisher and a heron. The fields are full of different wild flowers and have lots of ground nesting bumble bees and a wide variety of different insects. I often come across snakes, voles, stoats and hedgehogs. There are lots of woodpeckers, kestrels nesting in an old tree each year, swifts in the stables, and I have seen a buzzard take a rabbit. At night the bats and owls come out. With the occasional fox, muntjac and badger the spotter's guide is almost complete.
